The Department of Immigration and Emigration launched a system called “Electronic Travel Authorization - ETA” in order to grant prior approval for visa via online for the foreign nationals who visit Sri Lanka and those who travel via Sri Lanka for short term requirements.
This new system will come into effect from January 01, 2012 for all Countries to grant visas for short time requirements , the foreign nationals visiting the country on purposes of tourism affairs, medical treatments, sports, cultural shows, business conferences and discussions, training programs and seminars can pay the relevant fee and apply for the Electronic Travel Authorization via www.eta.gov.lk established in the Department of Immigration and Emigration.
Application for ETA should be submitted electronically using one of the six submission methods mentioned above. No passport copies or photographs are required. Simply fill in the application form and submit it electronically to the Department of Immigration & Emigration. The Department maintains a NO REFUND policy.
If ETA is granted, the applicant will be notified accordingly. ETA holder is entitled to enter Sri Lanka within three months from the date of issue of ETA.
In the event of ETA being rejected the system will send a referral notification to the applicant and he/she needs to contact the nearest Sri Lanka Overseas Mission for necessary assistance.
The valid ETA holders are advised to check the accuracy of their details given in the ETA before they undertake their travel to Sri Lanka. It is advisable to keep a copy of the ETA approval with you to be produced at the port of entry in Sri Lanka. The ETA holders should fulfill the following requirements at the port of entry:
* A Passport valid for not less than 6 months from the date of arrival;
* A Confirmed Return ticket;
* Sufficient funds to meet the expenses during the stay.
The ETA is initially limited up to 30 days from the date of arrival and it may be extended up to six months.
